The Eastern Area Community of Practice held its fall gathering at Stony Point Retreat Center in Stony Point, New York, with 38 members, including a surprise visit from Johnny Bush. The EACoP’s mission is to support and advance the development of Certified Educator Candidates, achieved through conversations and presentations focused on the theory and practice of Clinical Pastoral Education.
At the gathering, Mychal Springer and members of the Good Enough Supervision Consortium presented a case study prepared by Elizabeth Kalu (CEC). The case was read, followed by a three-member panel analysis based on one of the three content competency areas. Ansia Chahoy (CEC) presented an insightful critique on the theological/spiritual implications of the case. Allie Uhlich (CEC) offered a comprehensive theory-based assessment using Internal Family Systems (IFS), which linked key elements of the case. The presentation concluded with Mychal’s evaluation through the perspectives of Parker Palmer and learning theory.
Additionally, members engaged in group discussions around ACPE’s relationship with the Department of Education. The CoP membership unanimously supported extending next fall’s gathering to two days. Greg Stoddard concluded his term as Convenor and will transfer responsibilities to Rhoda Toperzer next year. Joel Risser (CEC) and Mychal Springer (CE) joined the planning committee, which includes Robin Ross, Tiina Nummela, and Lynn Mikulak.
These gatherings are open to all ACPE members, so keep an eye out for the 2025 gathering notice.
