Grounded in Values, Growing Through Change
In times like these—marked by global, national, and organizational uncertainty—many of us are asking: What can I do that will make a difference? At ACPE, we believe one answer lies in how we care, how we lead, and how we give:
Focusing on What We Can Control.
Change is inevitable. In many ways, our training and our work are about accompanying and supporting others as they navigate and grow through change and crisis. But we also know that in times of upheaval—globally, nationally, organizationally within ACPE, and in our own lives—it’s easy to feel exhausted by uncertainty, overwhelmed by all that’s beyond our control, and powerless to address the things that matter most.
I recently read a quote from David Miller, MD, incoming CEO of Michigan Medicine, that I found both practical and inspiring:
“The last year has reminded me that, during times of uncertainty, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by factors beyond my control. A valuable and enduring lesson in these moments is recognizing the power of focusing on what I can control—my mindset, actions, and responses. Said differently, the key lesson for me has been to maintain a commitment to ‘controlling the controllables.’” (Becker’s Hospital Review, 3/19/25)
His words are a powerful reminder: even in uncertainty, we still hold agency—in our mindset, in our choices, and in how we show up for one another.
Grounded in Our Values
What is within our control? While that’s a philosophical question open to debate, what we do know is this: as ACPE, we know who we are, and we know what we stand for. Our values remain constant.
Our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility is more important now than ever. As many forces seek to dismantle the very things we uphold, the Foundation for ACPE stands with you, for you—supporting the mission and values of ACPE through your work each and every day.
Celebrating and Supporting Our Community
Foundation sub-committees recently had the honor of reviewing member applications for grants and service awards, along with student stipend requests. Each submission reflects the innovative, compassionate, and life-changing work you do as Psychotherapists, Certified Educators, and Certified Educator Candidates.
To all who submitted proposals or nominated colleagues: thank you. You inspire us.
We’re also delighted to welcome The Rev. Dr. Garrett Starmer, III, ACPE Certified Educator (retired), as a new Board Director for the Foundation. Thank you, Garrett, for your continued service to ACPE.
And as we look ahead to the ACPE Annual Conference and the joyful celebration of 100 years of Clinical Pastoral Education, we invite you to take part in this momentous milestone. We will share more details about how we will celebrate the joy of giving at this year’s Foundation Donor Reception at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis!
Be Part of the Future We're Building Together
Sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities are still available. We strongly encourage you to explore these opportunities with your institution and other stakeholders who benefit from connecting with the ACPE community. You can learn more here or contact Jasmine Okafor for details.
