One of the opportunities to support ACPE students offered by the Foundation for ACPE is the Hemenway Scholars Program, named after Joan Hemenway, to honor her contributions to ACPE, spiritual care and education theory and research, as well as countless students and care recipients. As many CPE summer internships do not provide stipends, we offer this scholarship to summer interns to help offset educational debt, housing costs, living expenses, etc. This is one of the many ways, as donors, you give back.

I would like to highlight one of the Hemenway Scholars from 2023, Gemma Cubero del Barrio, who had a transformational experience last summer while completing CPE. Gemma writes:

“During this summer unit of CPE I have been blessed to experience a wide range of realities. I saw tragedy in the eyes of a family who lost a loved one to suicide. I felt the joy in the eyes of a sister who had been able to accompany her brother through his last breath…I experienced inner peace after accompanying a man in spiritual distress due to losing his tongue to cancer. I will never forget the couple facing the stillbirth of their first child…”

Your donations to the Foundation for ACPE make it possible for students like Gemma to experience CPE with less stress related to financial concerns. This year, ACPE will provide stipends of up to $1,500 for up to 16 summer ACPE students.

The Hemenway Scholars Program application due date has been extended to April 26, 2024.

Eligibility: Any student fully accepted into an ACPE accredited program or accredited spiritually integrated psychotherapy program. Some exclusions may apply.

Application Criteria:

Awards will be made to those ACPE students who:

  • Have accepted a position in an unpaid summer CPE unit or spiritually integrated psychotherapy clinical placement and can provide documentation demonstrating their acceptance;
  • Are from under-represented identity groups within ACPE and offer various forms of diversity
  • Hemenway Scholars will be required to share a written reflection on their learning experiences from their ACPE summer unit.

Your willingness to give back through donations to the Foundation for ACPE make a world of difference to our scholarship recipients and ultimately the care recipients they encounter. I invite you to make a gift today or become a monthly donor. Thank you for your contributions to the Foundation for ACPE!
