Competencies are Coming!

Written by Christine Davies, Certification Chair

In this season of gift-giving, I want to let you all know of a gift that will be coming from the ACPE Certification Commission in a few short weeks!

The Certification Commission has spent countless hours revising the CEC competencies over the past year and a half. Our intent behind the revisions was to make the competencies clearer, more concise, and consistent within and across Phases. We also included feedback from the ACPE Antibias Workgroup to incorporate our values and make the CEC Competencies more inclusive and accessible.

I am hoping this gift will bring joy and not woe, especially as the total number of Competencies for each Phase has been significantly reduced!

The revised CEC Competencies will be available in the ACPE Certification Manual on Jan. 1, 2025. (If you are like my children waiting for Santa, you are welcome to stay up all night to see when this present will arrive!)

CECs may opt to immediately use the revised Competencies or continue to use the outgoing Competencies until they complete their current phase. CECs will be assessed in their next phase using the revised Competencies. January 1, 2026, all will use the revised Competencies.

Cam Holzer, our incoming Chair of Certification, will share more information about the revised CEC Competencies in the New Year. There will also be a series of presentations on the revised CEC Competencies. Zoom links for those will come closer to the date - but if you’d like to mark your calendars now, they will be held from 12pm to 1:15pm EST on the following dates:

  • Thursday, Jan 9
  • Thursday, Jan 16
  • Friday, Jan 17
  • Thursday, Jan 23

In closing, it has been my honor to be your Certification Chair for the past two years. I am excited about our Certification process and all the excellent CECs making their way through it!
