Clarifications Regarding Peer Review and National Faculty

The Professional Wellbeing Committee (PWB) and Certification Commission (CC) collaboratively reviewed feedback from our membership provided through Peer Review reports and reflections, which pointed to the need to clarify some elements of peer review and national faculty processes.  The CC and PWB jointly offer the following updates:

Peer Reviews are handled by the Professional Wellbeing Committee. Peer Reviews are about the maintenance of one’s certification and not about adding NF status. Peer reviews are due every three years.  When a CE is due for a peer review, they will be notified by the ACPE office at the beginning of the year. Those CEs who are already NF (including those who became NF through the legacy process if certified before January 1, 2019) will need to write about and discuss with their peer review committees how they continue to learn and grow as National Faculty. If they supervise CECs, they can do so by providing a clinical demonstration (vignette) about this supervision. If they don’t supervise CECs directly, they may describe their participation in CEC consultation groups or discuss their engagement with NF competencies. Updated peer Review Guidelines and Forms will be sent to each CE due for a peer review. They can also be accessed here using your login credentials for SharePoint. Questions about the Peer Review process can be addressed to the PWB by emailing Peer.Review@acpe.edu or PWB chair Jurgen.Schwing@acpe.edu.

National Faculty requests and related materials will be submitted to and processed by the Certification Commission. The Commission is in the process of further clarifying the NF process and updating the Certification Manual: https://www.manula.com/manuals/acpe/acpe-manuals/2016/en/topic/becoming-a-member-of-the-national-faculty . Note the current manual uses the term “peer review” in reference to the NF assessment process; however, these review committees are under the purview of the Certification Commission and are distinct from certification maintenance Peer Reviews handled by the Professional Well-Being committee.

One final update and clarification, some hopefully good news for new NFs: When a CE successfully completes the National Faculty review, a formal Peer Review will not be due until three years following this CE being granted status as NF.
