Once a month the ACPE Professional Ethics Commission (PEC) posts a couple of statements from our Code of Professional Ethics for ACPE Members.  Each posting is accompanied by a brief personal reflection from a member of the PEC discussing some ways this person lives these commitments*.

For December, Julie Hanada, ACPE Certified Educator, Seattle, WA, shares a variety of resources:

The list of resources and recommendations come from a variety of ACPE members. Some focus on the study and research of ethics and professionalism. Other may be helpful if your interest and focus is to continually develop in your art and craft of supervision, connecting with others, reflecting on your own journey and process, or expanding your ability to catch yourself before getting into trouble.

Books:
  • Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory and Practice, by Derald Wing Sue, et al
  • What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing, by Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey
  • Taking Care:  Monitoring Power Dynamics and Relational Boundaries in Pastoral Care & Counseling, by Carrie Doehring
  • Teaching Race: Pedagogy and Practice, by Amie Thurber et. al. Vanderbilt Center for Teaching

Podcasts:

  • Code Switch is a podcast with fearless conversations about race hosted by journalists of color, the podcast tackles the subject of race with empathy and humor.
  • Be Antiracist with Ibram X. Kendi imagines what an antiracist society might look like and how we all can play an active role in building one.

ACPE Resources:

ACPE has a wide range of resources available on SharePoint. Along the top table there is a “Learning and Resources” tab. Under it you will find webinars, the Curriculum Resource Room and the Anti-Bias Work Group Resources, with each covering a wide range of topics. These resources are designed for our work. One example from the Curriculum Resource Room is “Religious, Spiritual & Values-Based Diversity in CPE: Working with Students from outside Christian and Theistic Traditions”. This is a recording of a session held September 16, 2022 and includes a variety of related articles

The PEC highly recommends that all ACPE Certified Educators view both Certification Core Curriculum Professional Ethics videos for their ethical self-awareness, self-reflection, and supervisory practice.

To access the videos:
1. Log in to the ACPE website.
2. From your Sharepoint page:
1. Hover on the “Educator Certification” tab, to see the “Core Curriculum Phase 1” and “Core Curriculum Phase II”.
2. You can click on the ethics videos in each phase.

The video slides are available below the video link. The video shares some of the wisdom we have gained from reflecting on our experiences in professional ethics as an association. We trust it will be valuable for all educators in our ongoing process of reflecting on the practicalities of ethics in our CPE work.
