In our ongoing oversight of the process and to best support centers in their work, the Certification Commission is soliciting successful practices from centers that have helped their CECs succeed and thrive in the Certification process. The Commission will review all submissions and in addition to sharing them with the larger ACPE community in this forum, will also create a CEC Resources Page in SharePoint to share these practices and additional resources. Having a repository of successful practices and resources for Certified Educator Candidates is of prime importance to the Certification Commission. We hope to gather successful, workable, and a nice variety of practices that will help Educators and CECs stay connected during the Certification Process.

What successful practices have you developed that might be helpful to your colleagues?

Please share with us by sending them to Marc Medwed, ACPE Associate Executive Director, at marc.medwed@acpe.edu. If you share your practice with us, please include your contact information so that we can follow up with questions if needed. Thank you for being an important part of developing ACPE’s certification process and our new Certified Educators!

Each year the CEC at Indiana University Health participates in a Faculty Review with the CPE Faculty. The goal of the Faculty Review process is to provide the CEC with support, a meaningful assessment of their productivity, promotion of the development of goals and expectations, fostering and supporting professional development and mentorship, and guiding one’s career advancement through formative discussions with CPE faculty in the IU Health CPE System.

The focus of this Faculty Review is to offer a time for dialogue and feedback to ensure the CEC is progressing in the Certification Process. The CEC presents the following for the Faculty Review:

  1. Discuss learning goals at the time of this review addressing the engagement of the goals.
  2. Discuss the scope of practice within your clinical assignments or work with CPE students.
  3. Identify any major barriers to the learning environment at this time in your process that need addressing.
  4. Provide a copy of the Certified Educator Competencies Assessment Form reflecting the current CEC Phase
    1. Professionalism: Values and Attributes, Ethics, and Reflective Practice & Self Care
    2. Relationships & Identity: Relational Abilities, Identity Formation as Educator/Supervisor, and Cultural Awareness/Humility (within educational context)
    3. Education: Curriculum Development, Teaching Skills, Assessment of learning, Intervention and Consultation
    4. Conceptualization & Theories: Spiritual Care Theology/Philosophy and History, Supervision and Behavioral Sciences, Educational and Personality theory, Systems (Contextual) theory, and Research Knowledge and Methodology
    5. Application and Integration: Pastoral/Spiritual Care Practice, Practice of Supervision, Integration of Theory and Practice.
    6. Leadership and Organizational Development: Organizational Systems, Management and Administration, Accreditation and ACPE Standards, Continuous Improvement

For this process, the written materials are due to each faculty member three weeks before the scheduled review. This allows the faculty members time to prepare for the review time. After the review, the CEC receives feedback on the review process, written materials and progression through certification. Along with the feedback are recommendations for areas of concentration to help the candidate and primary CE navigate for future learning and integration. The CEC places a copy in the Portfolio and there is a copy retained in the CEC’s file.

This is one way that IU Health invests in, supports, and ensures the candidate is not stuck in the process.

We look forward to receiving your insights and practices and to sharing them with others!
