Spiritually Integrated Music Therapy
Religion, spirituality and the practice of music therapy intersect in intuitive and organic ways, yet many music therapists feel the need for additional skills with which to engage these dynamics in depth. Participants will explore the foundations of addressing religious and spiritual issues from an ethically-grounded and self-aware perspective and will consider ways of assessing clients’ spiritual resources and struggles.

Prerequisite
MT-BC or current enrollment in a music therapy master's or master's equivalency program.
Learning Objectives
Through lecture, discussion, role plays, and experiential learning activities participants will be able to:
- Articulate three reasons why addressing the religious and spiritual needs of clients is relevant to music therapy practice. (CBMT domains III. A. 1. a, b, f, and III. A. 2. bbb, eee.)
- Describe at least two ethical principles within the AMTA Code of Ethics that are essential to the assessment and treatment of spiritual needs in music therapy (CBMT domains II. B. 4. g, II. C. 4, and II. D. 1, 2.).
- Identify at least two methods of assessing for spiritual struggles in the context of music therapy (CBMT domains II. B. 4. g, l.)
- Identify at least two methods of assessing for spiritual resources in the context of music therapy (CBMT domains II. B. 3. h., and II. B. 4. d, g, j, m.)

Molly Hicks
Molly Hicks, MMT, MT-BC, FT is a bereavement coordinator with Penn Medicine Hospice in the Philadelphia, PA area, where she serves bereaved adults through individual counseling and support groups. She earned her Fellow in Thanatology (FT) credential in 2021, has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and actively supervises music therapy interns.
