Confianza y Corazon: Exploring spirituality and contemplative practices in the clinical care of Latinx clients

In the United States, Latinx individuals and especially Latinx immigrants are vulnerable and at-risk populations. They exhibit rates of psychological distress at the same frequency as the general population but are more likely to exhibit severe symptoms and less likely to receive any mental health treatment. Religion and spirituality are core values in Latinx culture and for many Latinxs, spirituality is critical to the healing process. In this presentation, we will explore culturally responsive care with Latinx clients and describe how integrating spirituality and especially contemplative practices could improve engagement and outcomes when working with Latinx clients in counseling and psychotherapy. 

After participating in this workshop, participants will be able to 
  1. identify the relevant research on Latino mental health and health disparities.
  2. describe Latinx cultural values relevant to spiritual care and psychotherapy
  3. identify strategies for integrating spirituality into their work with Latinx clients
  4. recognize the evidence-based contemplative practices and their utility in clinical care
  5. identify the relevant research on Latino mental health and health disparities.

Daniel Gutierrez is the Vera W. Barkley Associate Professor of Counselor Education at William & Mary and Co-Director of the Thrive Research and Intervention Center. He is author or co-author of over 50 articles and is President of the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC).
