Position Description:

The Director is responsible for and manages the overall operations and financial management of the pastoral care and spiritual programs for patients, families and staff at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania locations. Identify and pursue opportunities to improve the pastoral care and spiritual support using all resources of the Pastoral Care Department, including but not limited to staff chaplains, per diem chaplains, students, volunteers, interns and educators.

Responsible for maintaining Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) accreditation anchor site at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Supervise Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) staff educator(s) and contracted supervisor(s). Provide substitute supervisory coverage for CPE programs as necessary.

Engage nearby community and clergy to identify and address social determinates that may hinder patient outcomes. Identify and support spiritual care research opportunities to further the field of chaplaincy in healthcare. Represent spiritual care needs of patients, families and staff on various hospital committees and workgroups. Uses data and metrics to measure and track progress and inform department decisions.

90% of time will be spent on administrative and management tasks. Remainder of time will be performing as CPE educator or direct chaplaincy work with patients, families and staff. 

• Supervises department personnel including administrative, educational, clinical and clerical support positions, which may include Certified Education candidate (CEC) Fellow.

• Identifies and pursues opportunities for Pastoral Care to impact patient and staff experience while documenting and measuring outcomes and impact of interventions.

• Maintains ACPE accreditation for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

• Works with religious organizations to coordinate spiritual care and support for patients of all faiths

• Coordinates and leads community outreach efforts with HUP and University resources to address spiritual and social determent issues affecting the healthcare of the community-at-large • Fills in as an CPE educator as needed

• Identify and support spiritual care research projects with goal of regular publication

• Provide support to patients, families and staff as a chaplain

• Other duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements:

Masters Divinity And 3 years ACPE certified supervisor

5 years Management experience in healthcare setting

5 years Chaplain in healthcare setting


Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) through Association of Professional Chaplains (ACP)

Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) Certification

 Team building and leadership skills

Comfortable with using analytics and data to inform decisions

Fiscal management skills including budget planning, budget execution and understanding of monthly financial statement

Ability to create and maintain a staff schedule across multiple locations

Outstanding leadership skills and ability to work with all levels of the organization

Comfortable formally presenting to public as well as all levels of hospital staff

Experience leading community outreach initiatives in a diverse, multicultural setting

Strategic thinker able to generate and execute solutions to achieve measure outcomes

Extensive knowledge of pastoral theory and experience implementing an a high stress environment

Comfortable listening supportively to patients, families and staff

Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic environment

Knowledge of academic and/or research operations

Experience creating and running reports within EPIC/PennChart Ability to provide CPE instruction, supervision and consultation to individuals
