South Texas VA Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program

Dates: Sunday, June 20, 2021 – Saturday, June 18, 2022

Three CPE Residents – Three Level I CPE Residency Positions are available each year at the South Texas VA Health Care System. The three CPE Residents will experience four different three-month clinical education opportunities in intensive care, surgery, and mental health, and in the specialty areas of polytrauma, spinal cord injury, dementia care, and substance use. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, have an M.Div. from an accredited seminary (with graduation date prior to June 2019), ideally have completed minimally one unit of Level I CPE, and be pursuing endorsement for chaplaincy in the VA. Three CPE Specialty Fellows – Three Level II CPE Fellowship Positions are available each year at the South Texas VA Health Care System. The three CPE Fellows will experience twelve months in a specific clinical educational opportunity as outlined below. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, have an M.Div. from an accredited seminary (with graduation date prior to June 2019), have completed minimally four units of CPE (one of which must be at Level II), and be pursuing endorsement for chaplaincy in the VA. The stipend is $32,592 plus health benefits. To apply, please submit completed ACPE application to the below e-mail or mailing address by February 26, 2021. -Mental Health Fellow – The Mental Health Fellow will have clinical educational opportunities with the inpatient male and female mental health units, PTSD spirituality group, moral injury group, and outpatient mental health chaplain appointments.

-Mental Health Fellow with End-Of-Life Focus – The Mental Health Fellow with an End-of-Life Focus will have clinical educational opportunities with the geriatric inpatient unit, Home Based Primary Care Program, and Bereavement Support Group (Note: This fellow and the Palliative Care Fellow will trade clinical assignments at mid-year). 

-Palliative Care Fellow – The Palliative Care Fellow will have clinical educational opportunities with the palliative care consult team, community living center, and geriatric extended care clinic (Note: switches clinical assignment mid-year with the End-of-Life Fellow above).
